In the interest of consumer’s safety, we are helping to spread the word that some models of Cannon Gas Log Fires – Cannon Fitzroy and Cannon Canterbury, have been found to have a potentially harmful safety issue. The safety alert has recently been re-released by Energy Safe Victoria (ESV), the Independent Regulatory Body which is responsible for electricity, gas and pipeline safety. Only ‘inserted’ Gas Log Fires are involved, freestanding units are not included. However, in some cases, suspect units have even needed to be fully replaced by comparable Gas Log Fires, such as the Real Flame Pyrotech and Heat n Glo I-30.
The Cannon Gas Log Fires concerned were manufactured between 20th March 2001 and 8th October 2009. Although there are supposedly around 12,000 heaters which could be affected, less than 1000 owners have acted on the safety alert. Using the Cannon Gas Log Fires, Fitzroy and Canterbury, could risk carbon monoxide escaping into living areas. The hazardous conditions which increase the risk of carbon monoxide escaping include factors such as;
- incorrect installation
- poor service record
- if manufacturer’s recommended service schedule and procedures have not been followed
- if the heating units are in a house that is draft-proofed
- if fans or range hoods are not fully operational
There are a both mechanical and installation problems identified by the ESV. These can include;
- a draught diverter which may not have been designed to handle air flow correctly
- some of these Cannon Gas Log Fires might not have perfectly aligned burners
- improper sealing due to poor installation processes
If you have either a Fitzroy or Canterbury manufactured between the above dates, Cannon will reimburse up to $150 towards the costs of the call-out and testing. If your unit is found to be defective Cannon has also agreed to refund at least $200 in compensation. For a more detailed discussion go to the Cannon Australia website by simply clicking here.
If you own one of the potentially affected Gas Log Fires, your safety (and the safety of your loved ones) is at risk and it’s important your appliance is checked by a professional. If they are found to be faulty, they need to be replaced or repaired.
The Gas Log Fire Company can help with servicing and repairs of some of these units, but they may need to be capped off and could require replacement if they are unsafe for use.
